Bill DeWalt is the first President and Director of the Musical Instrument Museum. He joined the museum in March 2007. Prior to joining MIM, he served as the Director of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh.
He received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Connecticut in 1976. He subsequently held teaching and administrative positions in anthropology at the University of Kentucky from 1977 until 1993, and was Distinguished Service Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh from 1993 until 2007. He won major teaching and research awards at both universities.
Bill's extensive publications as an anthropologist focused on the human dimensions of natural resource and environmental policies, the cultures of Latin America and anthropological methods. He has served frequently as a consultant for such organizations as the World Wildlife Fund, World Bank, International Finance Corporation, Inter-American Development Bank, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
