Barbara Hamann


 

As MIM's Conservator, Barbara is responsible for the scientific examination, condition assessment, and conservation treatment of the musical instruments and other objects in the museum's collection, and collaborates with the Registrar to manage the collection's preventive care. Barbara comes to MIM from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, where she served for seven years as Conservator and Head of the Section of Conservation.
 
She received a BSc in Archaeological Conservation and Materials Science from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London in 1989, having completed a pre-program conservation internship at the Milwaukee Public Museum. During academic breaks at the Institute of Archaeology, she gained experience in the conservation laboratories of the Field Museum of Natural History and the British Museum. Following a Getty Trust post-graduate internship in objects conservation at the Art Institute of Chicago, Barbara served as assistant - then associate - conservator at the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago from 1990 to 1998 and then as Museum and Historic Sites Conservator at the Wyoming State Museum from 1998 to 2000. She has been a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation since 1997.
 
Barbara also holds a BA in Classics (Greek) from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and an MA in Classical Art and Archaeology from the University of Michigan.
